Perry is a Chicago native birthed to Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. The role of Jackie Harris was played by her mom in both of her two appearances on Roseanne. However, her parents did not let her perform until she reached the age of adulthood due to the impact stress might have on their daughter. Perry stated she felt shy to act in high school but began acting in the theater at Northwestern University as a way to make friends after transferring to the university from Boston University. Perry managed to get minor TV roles in Law & Order: Criminal Intent after she graduated. However, her homesickness brought her back to California to return, where she started working on stage. She and her mother starred on Broadway with her in The Other Place, in 2013. The show featured the father of her character Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in 2015 at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry played a role in 9 episodes of the ABC crime thriller The Family in 2016. Her father played her character in her role on the ABC drama Scandal. She played the role of the younger Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off series of CBS's The Big Bang Theory was another portrayal by her younger mother. The actress was chosen for the role despite having a close familial connection to the character.
